“I think we’re close” ”“ Declan Browne backs Tipperary to thrive

Declan Browne believes Tipperary are ready to make another breakthrough under manager Liam Kearns this summer ahead of their Munster Senior Championship opener against Cork.

The Premier and the Rebels have enjoyed an intriguing Championship rivalry in recent seasons. And in 2016, Tipperary reached a surprise All-Ireland semi-final after earlier claiming a narrow two-point Championship win in Thurles.

Kearns, who took over in 2015, has claimed his current squad is the best he has had at his disposal since taking the role.

And Tipperary football legend Browne is positive about his county’s chances of making another meaningful impact at the business end of the season.

“Being biased, I think we’re close,” Browne said.

“Last year was a little bit of a stumbling block. We had Cork beaten but we let them back up the pitch again to score a goal that put us out.

“And that’s the way Munster football is set up. If you can get to a Munster final you’re only one game away from Croke Park and now you’re only one game away from Super 8s.

“It is always going to be close with the way Tipperary are because we have the talents all together at once. Colin O’Riordan is away; Peter Acheson is away – but they’re long term.

“But Liam has everyone he wanted three years ago when he came in at his disposal which helps big time, because there’s nothing worse as a manager when you’re looking over your shoulder to see all your good players gone.

“In terms of Liam’s point of view, I’d say he’s very happy. And from a supporter’s point of view watching Tipp in the league and being a small few inches away from playing Division 1 football next year.

“It does bode well for tomorrow night but Cork are Cork. They’re never too far from the mark, so it will be another humdinger tomorrow night.”
