"I was completely lucid. I knew what was going on" - Michael Lynagh on suffering a stroke

Michael Lynagh has spoken to Newstalk about he survived a stroke in 2012.

The Australian legend has written a book Blindsided about the experience three years ago. He spoke to Off the Ball's Ger Gilroy last night about how he has coped with the incident that could have greatly affected his qualify of life.

Lynagh played 72 times for Australia and retired from international rugby in 1995 with a then World Record 911 points scored. No Australian has since beaten that points. Lynagh was also part of the 1991 World Cup winning side.

The 52-year-old told Off the Ball that he remembers everything that happened before he was brought to hospital. "I was completely lucid. I knew what was going on. I could speak. I could use my hand and my legs".

Lynagh added that apart from "some funny feeling down my leg", only his sight has been affected in the aftermath "The doctors still dont understand why I wasn't more affected than what I am. I still only have half my sight. I have no peripheral vision to the left".

"In stroke survivors, there is a lot of depression involved. You can feel yourself going that way. I still do that, but nothing that I can't cope with. It's there and you just got to be careful", Lynagh added. He told Ger how the initial euphoria of survival has subsided as he was told would happen by doctors.

You can listen to the full interview below, along with his memories of Jonah Lomu who died earlier this week.
