IAAF maintain ban on Russian athletes

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)  has announced Russia will remain banned from all international competition.

Russian athletes will now be barred from the London World Championships this summer.

But the IAAF says some of the nation's athletes will likely compete as neutrals at the World Championships.

"Clean Russian athletes have been badly let down by their national system. We must ensure they are protected and that those safeguards give confidence to the rest of the world that there is a level playing field of competition when Russians return," said IAAF president Sebastian Coe.

Their ban came in after the McLaren report alleged it operated a state sponsored doping programme.

In an interim report from the IAAF Taskforce, they concluded that based on the outcomes of the report, the Taskforce "does not think the Council should consider reinstatement of RusAF's membership today".

The Taskforce also set "milestones" to be met in order to grant reinstatement including "testing of Russian athletes is taking place without any further adverse incidents or difficulties".

Another milestone that would need to be met is  "an appropriate official response to the McLaren reports, specifically addressing Professor McLaren's findings that officials from the Ministry for Sport, the FSB, and the Centre for Sport Preparation were involved in the doping scheme, either by convincingly rebutting those findings or else by acknowledging and properly addressing them."

The World Championships in London will begin on August 4th 2017.
