IAAF rejects 28 applications for Russian athletes to compete as neutrals

World athletics' governing body has rejected bids from 28 more Russians to compete as neutrals - and approved just three.

400m runner Kseniya Aksyonova, javelin thrower Vera Rebrik and 400m hurdler Vera Rudakova have all been given permission to compete as neutrals.

The IAAF has not named the 28 who failed with their cases, but the total of Russians approved to resume competition has now risen to 15.

A total of 27 applications remain under review.

Track and field stars from Russia remain banned from IAAF events following allegations of state-sponsored doping which surfaced in a World Anti-Doping Association (WADA) Independent Commission report in November 2015.

They have been suspended from by world athletics' governing body since November 2015 and missed last year's Olympic Games in Rio.

The ban has been extended which will prohibit Russian athletes from competing in the World Championships in London this August.

Earlier this year, seven Russian athletes cleared to compete as neutrals.
