IABA release statement in reaction to Irish coach's comments about Michael O'Reilly

The IABA have responded to comments made yesterday by Team Ireland coach John Conlan in relation to Michael O'Reilly.

Conlan claimed that O'Reilly was absent from the Irish training camp for eight weeks before heading to Rio.

But they confirmed that he had three weeks with his club in Portlaoise after coming home from the Olympic Qualification competition in Baku with a knuckle injury and flu.

"The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) can confirm that Michael O’Reilly was with the Irish Boxing Team in Baku, Azerbaijan from 2nd to 26th June partaking in both a pre-competition camp and the Olympic Qualification Competition," said the IABA.

"On his return home from Azerbaijan Michael had a knuckle injury and also had the flu. He trained at his local club, Portlaoise Boxing Club during this period and joined up with the team when they departed for the pre-Olympic Rio Training camp on July 19th."

Last week, O'Reilly released a statement in which he admitted to unintentionally taking a supplement which led to him failing a drug test prior to the Games.
