Ulster lock Iain Henderson is expecting it to take time before combinations gel on the Lions Tour and is happy to get a win under his belt in the opening match.

The tourists laboured to a 13-7 win over the New Zealand Provincial Barbarians on Saturday in a game they were expected to win easily.

Speaking after the win, the Ireland international said: "I think there’s a bit of relief to get the win. We’re just going to make sure we can build on the performance there.

“If everything were to go completely perfectly it probably would have been more shocking. However, we’re looking forward to regrouping, hearing what the coaches have to say, hearing what we can build on and how we can get better for the next game.

“That Barbarians side came out highly motivated. They wanted to play and we knew we would have to weather that initial storm, they came at us quite hard in the first half.

“The whole Tour right up until the Tests will be a gelling experience and then working forward from there will definitely be interesting and that’s when we’ll get to know each other and probably get our attack and defence fully functioning.

“I think we’re happy enough with a win but everyone knows there are improvements to be made.”

The Lions head to Auckland to play the Blues on Wednesday.
