"If I could take back anything, it would be the front nine yesterday" - McIlroy reflects on Open performance

Rory McIlroy shot his best round of this year's Open Championship this afternoon, carding a four under-par 67 to leave him tied for fifth.

Frustration was the prevailing feeling after yesterday's round which saw him struggle in the conditions, but today McIlroy was a little bit more relaxed and saw the positives in his play.

"I played good, I knew I needed something like this to get myself up the leaderboard," he told Nick Dye after his round. "It would have been nice to birdie that 18th hole, not really to try and move up the leaderboard anymore but because I was determined to play that back-nine on one under-par at least.

"I didn't quite manage to do that but I played well. I feel like with the conditions I faced this week, I played pretty good. There were a few mistakes in there. If I could take back anything it would be the first nine holes yesterday. I didn't get off to the best of starts, but with what I had to play in there's no way I would get off to the scores that those guys were on."

McIlroy's performance tee to green was actually quite good over the four days considering the wind, but his short game let him down at vital stages during the third round.

"I've missed a few short putts this week but I'm not really putting that down to anything. I just think I need to a little bit more work and be a bit more confident."
