"If I was on the Arsenal board I'd be looking at Antonio Conte straight away"

Arsene Wenger still has a few weeks left in charge of Arsenal, but with the Frenchman having today announced his departure from the club come the end of the season, names will be thrown about as potential successors between now and the eventual appointment.

Former Arsenal player Stewart Robson joined OTB for a special broadcast directly after the news was released, and he already had one definitive name in mind.

"If I was on the board I'd be looking at Antonio Conte straight away. He's going to leave Chelsea, I think there's no question about that. He's won the title with Juventus three out of three years. He's won it one last year with Chelsea.

"I think he did a fantastic job with Italy when he had some very poor players which has been proven now by Italy not qualifying for the World Cup. I would go with Antonio Conte. That would be a brave move by the board, but probably one they won't take, they'll probably go with someone like Joachim Low or someone like that".

Robson also said that whoever takes charge next season will be in a difficult position, as he feels Wenger has left them a lot of work to do, criticising not just the mentality of the club, but the quality of the squad the Frenchman has assembled.

"I think it's the best thing for Arsenal, and I think the next manager will struggle because he's left the club in quite a state in terms of the mentality, the philosophy, and the amount of players that are at the club that aren't quite good enough. So I think it's going to be very difficult for the next manager".

When asked for his thoughts about the reactions from the current squad for the rest of the season, with Arsenal a two-legged tie against Atletico Madrid from a Europa League final, Robson said it could go either way, much like the squad's ability to perform.

"I think some will be pleased, some will be disappointed. They've got every chance of winning the Europa League, they've got a big tie against Atletico Madrid. If they can win that I think they'll win it".

"You don't know how the Arsenal players will respond because of the past few years we've seen some great displays and we've seen some horrendous displays. Which way is it going to go? We don't know"
