SSE Airtricity League Premier Division leaders Dundalk have been held to a draw by Shamrock Rovers.

The League of Ireland champions and Europa League group stage participants had to come from a goal down to secure a 1-1 result at Oriel Park, which leaves them five points clear at the top of the table.

A mistake by Dundalk keeper Gary Rogers allowed Rovers to take the lead in the 33rd minute as Gary Shaw put the Hoops ahead.

But Brian Gartland grabbed a vital equaliser for the league leaders in the 59th minute when he fired the ball home from just six yards out.

Dundalk now lead Cork City by five points, having played a game more.
