Inconsistency marring Shamrock Rovers' season

Shamrock Rovers once again find themselves looking upwards with envy as Cork City run away with an early lead at the top of the SSE Airtricity league.

The Leesiders have won all eight league matches so far this season and hold a six point lead over reigning champions Dundalk.

Rovers sit a daunting 15 points back already at this early stage of the season despite investing heavily in player recruitment over the winter.

They welcome Sligo Rovers to Tallaght Stadium on Friday as they mark 30 years since they left their old home at Glenmalure Park in Milltown.

The Dublin side have lost five matches already this season and with three teams being relegated later this year - they may find themselves in an unwanted scrap to avoid the drop rather than a chase for silverware which their fans demand.

Sligo head to Tallaght only a point behind their hosts and they may consider the game a relegation six-pointer despite being less than a third of the way through the campaign.

Sligo go into the match on the back of a 2-0 home win over Bohemians while Shamrock Rovers lost 2-1 to Drogheda last time out.
