"Increasingly you get the sense there's something happening with Ireland" - George Hook

George Hook was once firmly backing Australia to be Rugby World Cup winners, but he's said “there’s something happening with Ireland” that has given him second thoughts.

Previewing Sunday's quarter final between Ireland and Argentina on Newstalk Lunchtime today, George said he’d see Ireland as “real favourites” in a one-off match up with Argentina, but “It’s quite complicated, it’s not simple,” he said.

“We’re playing them however seven days after one of the most physical games of rugby I have ever seen.

“What nobody can ascertain is how hurt are (Ireland)?”

George had previously backed Australia to once again lift the Webb Ellis trophy, but after Ireland’s showing against France he was ready to revise that view – but he can’t quite figure out what exactly has brought him around.

“Increasingly you get the sense there’s something happening with Ireland. I don’t know what it is, I don’t know why it is, but there’s something happening.”

“There’s something happening and it does happen, it happens in life, in politics, in war – ‘there is a time in tide in the affairs of men, which taken to the flood, leads on to fortune’ as Shakespeare famously said," George added.
