Infantino confirms video assistant refs for 2018 World Cup

FIFA president Gianni Infantino says video referees will be used at next year's World Cup in Russia.

It was trialled in France's friendlies against Italy in September, and Spain last month.

Infantino says it will be introduced because they've had "only positive feedback" so far from its use.

"We will use video refereeing because we've had nothing but positive feedback so far," he said at a congress of the South American Football Confederation CONMEBOL in Chile.

"In 2017, when everyone in the stadium or at home can see within seconds if the referee made a mistake, we can't have a situation where the only one who can't see it is the referee."

In the France against Spain match, the video referee corrected two crucial decisions, correctly ruling out an offside goal for Antoine Griezmann and reversing a decision which had initially seen Gerard Deulofeu's goal for Spain ruled out.
