Ireland U20s suffer defeat in opening Six Nations clash with Wales

Ireland 24

Wales 35

Nigel Carolan’s men got off to a disappointing start against Wales in Donnybrook this evening, after the visitors ran over four tries in an eleven-point victory.

Cillian Gallagher, Kelvin Browne and Shane Daly got the tries for the home side, while scrum-half John Poland was named man of the match.

Johnny McPhillips' early penalty was then followed by Gallagher's try, when a lovely offload from Jimmy O’Brien kept the ball alive and Gallagher was on hand to slide over for the first try of the game.

Dan Jones pulled the visitors back into the game and unlike Ireland's McPhillips, Jones was able to add the conversion and give Wales a 10-8 lead.

Adam Beard crossed for the Welsh, with Jones converting to make it 20-14 at the break.

Kelvin Brown provided Ireland with a much needed boost, but after Peter Claffey was sent to the bin by referee Thomas Charabas on 56 minutes, the momentum once again shifted in favour of the visitors.

Harri Millard added a fourth try in the absence of Claffey and Jones sent over his final score of the evening to give the visitors a 35-19 lead.

Shane Daly added the consolation for Ireland, his late try boosting Irish spirits as they look to dust themselves off for next week's trip to France.
