Ireland assistant dismisses suggestions Sexton should alter tackle style

Ireland assistant coach Richie Murphy has dismissed suggestions that Jonathan Sexton must learn to change his tackle technique if he is to avoid another serious injury.

The Leinster No 10 is nursing a sore shoulder this week after Sunday's 16-16 draw with Wales at the Aviva Stadium.

There has been some scrutiny on the 30-year-old's approach to tackling but Murphy has dismissed some of those questions.

"Obviously playing at 10, he gets targeted a lot off first phase ball. Big guys like Jamie Roberts and Bastareaud in the past are running down those channels," he said.

"Sometimes you definitely need to go low and chop. But sometimes if you go low, you get run over anyway. So it's just a matter of picking the right tackle type for the particular situation."

Sexton, along with Andrew Trimble and Simon Zebo all sat out today's training session but the trio are all expected to return for Thursday's squad session.

Sean O'Brien took a full part in training today with the rest of the Ireland squad ahead of Saturday's Six Nations trip to France.

Full-back Rob Kearney had a restricted workout and is hoping to train fully on Thursday.

Keith Earls passed his first Head Injury Assessment after a concussion injury and has yet to be ruled out of this weekend but Tommy O'Donnell trained fully today after also clearing his HIA.
