Ireland starlet Jack Byrne set to step up his development in the Championship

As Ireland face into a post-Euro 2016 era after an encouraging showing in France, Jack Byrne is one of the prospects for the future.

The under-21 midfielder spent a year on loan from Manchester City in the Netherlands with Dutch club SC Cambuur.

The scorer of four goals - often spectacular - in 27 games in the Dutch Eredivisie last season, the 20-year-old won't be involved with Pep Guardiola's City, with his development now set to take place at Blackburn Rovers next season.

The Manchester Evening News report that he will step up his education in England's second tier, at the same club where Ireland Euro 2016 squad member Shane Duffy plays as a defender.

Former Celtic striker Anthony Stokes also joined the club this summer, while Byrne's fellow Ireland under-21 defender Darragh Lenihan has also been at Blackburn since 2011.

Byrne has already trained with Ireland's seniors, doing so in March during the pre-Euro 2016 friendlies.
