Ireland struggle at the World Cup of Golf, as Denmark run clear

Shane Lowry and Graeme McDowell struggled to keep up with the low scoring on Day 2 of the World Cup of Golf in Melbourne.

The Irish duo shot a second round of 69, to lie on -3 for the tournament, nine shots behind leaders Denmark. Lowry and McDowell opened their second round, but quickly recovered with two birdies on the front nine, to go to the turn at -1. The duo also birdied the tenth and eleventh holes, but parred the final seven holes to end the day on -3.

Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen and Thorbjorn Olesen have opened up a three-shot lead, after a second round of 60 and Kingston Heath. Starting the round three shots behind overnight leader Spain, the duo shot eight birdies and two eagles to move three clear of China, and a shot further ahead of Spain.

Despite falling nine shots behind the lead, Graeme McDowell thinks the team still have a chance of success on Sunday, but must first produce a low round in Saturday's foursomes.

"We've got to go out and try to shoot a number in the foursomes tomorrow, which I think we're more than capable of. If you can give yourself half a sniff come Sunday, in this format as Denmark are showing today, you can go really low. So if we can get within five or six of the lead at the very least coming into Sunday, we'll be right where we want to be with a chance to win. So tomorrow's an important day for us."

Lowry and McDowell will play with South Africa's Jaco van Zyl and George Coetzee in the third round. They tee off at 12.15am on Saturday morning, Irish time.
