Ireland to face Iceland in international friendly next March

The Republic of Ireland will take on Iceland next March in an international friendly, the FAI today announced.

The game, which will be played at the Aviva Stadium on March 28, will see Martin O'Neill's side take on the 2016 European Championship quarter-finalists and one of the success stories from this summer's event.

Iceland recorded an historic  victory over England, before crashing out to hosts France in a heavy 5-2 defeat. The plucky underdogs came from a goal down to beat Roy Hodgson's side 2-1, which proved to be the final game of his reign as manager.

They make their fourth visit to Dublin in what will be the first meeting of the teams since September 1997. The game will come as part of a double header, four days after Ireland take on Wales in a crunch World Cup qualifier at the Aviva Stadium.

Heimir Hallgrimsson's side have picked up two wins and a draw in their opening Group I games as they go in search of World Cup qualification.

Upcoming Republic of Ireland fixtures

Republic of Ireland v Wales (March 24, 2017)
Republic of Ireland v Iceland (March 28, 2017)
Republic of Ireland v Uruguay (June 4, 2017)
Republic of Ireland v Austria (June 11, 2017)
