Ireland win three medals at the UCI World Cup

Ireland performed excellently at the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Colombia at the weekend.

The Cali leg, is the third of four in the World Cup series, with Ireland finishing in sixth place in the medal standings in the Colombian city. 

With three medals, one gold, one silver and one bronze, Ireland's men' team brought won two medals, with the women's team winning a bronze medal.

The first medal won by the five-person team came from Mark Downey. The Down cyclist was the comfortable winner in the men's points race. He now leads the overall standing after the first three legs of the World Cup.

Following on from Downey's success, Lydia Boylan won a bronze medal in the women's scratch race. Boylan is the reigning back-to-back national champion, and has transferred her form from the road to the track.

On Sunday, Boylan teamed up with Felix English to win a silver medal in the men's madison to crown an outstanding weekend for Irish cycling.

Speaking to Cycling Ireland's website after winning his second medal, Boylan said that the mood in the team helped create such a positive weekend for the team in Cali. "A positive vibe is a positive team – that’s what produces great results."  

The final round of the World Cup takes place in Los Angeles later this month.
