Ireland's Paralympics 2016 a resounding success as pre-Games medal target is surpassed

On the eve of the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio, Ireland's chef de mission Denis Toomey unveiled Ireland's medal target when he spoke to Newstalk Sports Oisin Langan in the athletes village.

At London 2012, Team Ireland had brought home 16 medals, including eight golds.

Ahead of this year's event, Toomey set out a minimal target of eight medals, telling Oisin that "We have our own targets. We're looking for eight medals and if we can do that, we'll be very proud of our athletes."

Ultimately, Ireland didn't quite get the number of medals from 2012 but exceeded the mark of eight.

Over the last two weeks, Irish athletes secured a total of 11 medals: four goal, four silver and three bronze.

Jason Smyth and Michael McKillop repeated their track golds from 2012 again but cycling events also proved hugely successful for Ireland in Rio.

The Irish team finished eighth in the cycling medal table in terms of total golds with two (Eoghan Clifford and the duo of Katie-George Dunlevy and Eve McCrystal) and were also Top 10 in total overall medals with five.

So, overall a hugely successful adventure on the bikes and exceeding the minimum medal targets across all the rest of the disciplines.
