Ireland's Sean Baldwin produces season's best performance in Rio

Kildare's Sean Baldwin finished with a season's best performance on Saturday afternoon, as he took part in the qualifying round of the 10m Rifle Prone event in Rio.

Baldwin, who lost a leg in a car crash while serving with the Irish Defence Forces in Liberia in 2003, made his debut at the Paralympics in London in 2012 as Ireland's first athlete to compete in shooting.

Despite registering an impressive round, which started brightly, Baldwin finished in 33rd place.

"Today was an amazing day, I had a great start," explained Baldwin after the event to Newstalk. I shot ten 10s out of ten efforts at the beginning, which was very good value. The second string let me down though."

"I shot 48 inner 10s today, and 56 10s in total, but unfortunately I had four 9s and they killed me all together."

However, Baldwin was still in good form looking ahead to the rest of the calendar that awaits him over the next few days in Rio, noting that his favourite event is yet to come.

"Monday and Wednesday are going to be great they're the outdoor events. Monday it's three positions, all going well we're really in good form, and on Wednesday it's the 50m Prone, which is my favourite."
