Ireland's Six Nations fixtures at the centre of General Election row

A General Election is due to be called later this week and it appears that the voting date could be determined by one of Ireland's crunch games in this year's Six Nations.

Ireland are scheduled to play England in Twickenham on February 27 and it is believed that thousands of Irish fans are expected to travel over on the Friday to attend the round three match.

With a huge number of potential voters intending to travel to the game, Fine Gael representatives are keen to hold the election on Thursday February 25, in order to allow party followers to cast their vote and then proceed with their Six Nations travel plans in comfort.

Meanwhile, their coalition partners in the Labour party, are putting increasing pressure on Taoiseach Enda Kenny to hold the election on Friday February 26, to allow student voters to travel home to vote. Students are believed to be more likely to vote in favour of Labour party candidates which is a major factor behind their preference for this date.

With a number of seats expected to be closely contested and some 13 Government ministers supposedly in danger of losing their seats, both sides of the Coalition are looking for an election date that will maximise their vote.
