Ireland's group opponents Italy suffer major Marchisio blow for Euro 2016

Italy's Euro 2016 chances have been dealt a blow with midfielder Claudio Marchisio suffering ruptured cruciate ligaments.

The Juventus player was in action as his club beat Palermo 4-0 this afternoon but was withdrawn on a stretcher after the injury to his left knee.

Football Italia have confirmed that the player, who has 54 Italy caps will miss this summer's Euros in which the Azzurri are grouped with Ireland, Belgium and Sweden.

Juventus have released a statement confirming that an MRI scan has taken place and that Marchisio will undergo surgery in the next few days.
