Irish Aqua Blue team claim maiden major stage win

The Cork-based Aqua Blue pro cycling team have recorded a first stage win in a major race.

Larry Warbasse claimed this afternoon's fourth stage of the Tour of Switzerland, one of the main proving grounds for the Tour de France.

The US rider finished 40 seconds clear of General Classification leader Damiano Caruso of Italy and Steven Kruiswijk of Netherlands, in a time of 03:48:55.

Fellow Aqua Blue rider Daniel Pearson finished 73rd, while Aaron Gate (80th) was the other team member to achieve a Top 100 finish on the stage.

Irish rider Philip Deigan of Team Sky finished 64th in the stage.

Still in their first year, Aqua Blue will compete at the Vuelta a Espana later this summer.

Aqua Blue were launched at the start of 2017 with riders including Matt Brammeier and Martyn Irvine and are run by team owner Rick Delaney.

Speaking to Newstalk in December, Aqua Blue's long term intention is to compete at the sport's most prestigious Grand Tour, the Tour de France.

They registered with the Union de Cycliste Internationale in 2017 and have 16 riders in their squad.

In February, they received invites to April cycling classics at the Liege Bastogne Liege and La Fleche Wallonne.
