Champions Cup proves a bridge too far for Irish provinces

The Irish provinces had a rough time in the Champions Cup this weekend.

Leinster were handed their second defeat in their pool thanks to a late George Ford penalty that was enough to leave three points between the sides. This latest defeat to Bath comes on the back of a hammering at the hands of Wasps last weekend.

Josh Van Der Flier landed a late try that appeared to have saved Leinster from defeat but Ford made no mistake from the right hand side with his right foot as the clock ticked down. Leinster must now win their remaining four games of the competition and even that might not guarantee them a place in the knockout stages of the competition.

Ulster were handed a beating on home soil by Saracens on a scoreline of 27-9. The visitors scored 22 points in the second half despite the hosts leading for much of the first period.

Paddy Jackson kicked a dropgoal and two penalties but it was not enough to keep a rampant Saracens side down. They scored four tries through Alex Goode, Duncan Taylor, Owen Farrell and Billy Vunipola.

Ulster's Craig Gilroy spoke to Off The Ball's Nathan Murphy following his side's match, and highlighted that the start of the campaign in Europe has not been kind to the Irish provinces.

Munster, on the other hand, do not know when their game against Stade Francais Paris will be rescheduled. The game was postponed in light of the recent events in Paris and there has been no talk of rescheduling as France and Paris come to terms with the attacks.

Connacht lie atop their pool with a 21-17 win over Brive in their Challenge Cup game, which comes after a 31-14 win over Enisei in Siberia last weekend.

Other results:

Wasps beat Toulon 32-5 in Leinster's Pool 5 and Toulouse beat Oyonnax 24-18 in Pool 1.
