Jack Byrne will leave Blackburn Rovers this month as the player's loan spell at the club comes to an early end.

Despite signing a one-year loan deal back in the summer, Byrne is set to return to Manchester City where he could be on the move again in order to get first-team football under his belt.

At just 20-years-old, the player has been highly-regarded for a while, and impressed while on loan at Dutch side SC Cambuur last season. He was also invited to train with Martin O'Neill's senior Ireland squad to gain experience, but has struggled to settle at Blackburn, making just four appearances.

All of his games for the club came at the start of the season, a run in which they slumped to a record of three losses and one draw. Sitting 22nd in the Championship table, January's window will be a crucial one for the club as they look to stay in the second tier.

Speaking to the Lanchashire Telegraph, manager Owen Coyle highlighted that the player has a hugely bright future ahead of him, but that he simply wasn't a fit for Blackburn at the moment.

"I have had dialogue with Manchester City over Jack Byrne who we know is a very talented player. He will have a terrific career but I think it’s important Jack gets some game-time and he’s not had that of late.

"To be fair he has been ill over Christmas. The likelihood is that Jack will return to Manchester City and get some game-time, whether that be with another loan spell or in the youth teams."

Coyle had previously flagged in November that he wasn't worried about Byrne despite his lack of game time, but noted a move was on the cards.

"When January comes about then you look at that on the merits for everybody," Coyle said, "because their parent club may feel they need more game time."
