Is Benteke just "another Andy Carroll" at Liverpool?

After a string of 1-0 wins courtesy of the finishing of Christian Benteke, Liverpool were comparatively limp in their 2-0 defeat at the hands of West Ham on Saturday.

Football analyst and former Ireland and Chelsea defender Paddy Mulligan was thoroughly unimpressed by a number of Reds players - and not just based on Saturday's game.

He joined Oisin Langan and I on the Monday Rewind and while reviewing the weekend's Premier League action, took a few players to task.

"They were a disgrace [against West Ham] and I'll name the players. Firmino, an absolute embarrassment of a midfielder. Lallana, a joke. Only that he's English, the English media talk him up. An absolute joke. [Emre] Can is very mediocre. Lucas [is] past it," said Paddy, before turning to Benteke, who did not follow up his recent goals against Leicester and Sunderland with a performance at Upton Park.

"In fairness to Lallana, he made a run when he came on down the right hand side and he put in a smashing cross and Benteke never even bothered his head to make a run at the far post. And when he did decide to go, he was an hour too late. No football intelligence whatsoever. Another Andy Carroll at Liverpool football club. I would be saying 'get him out of the place very, very quickly'.

"Now, they've got [Alberto] Moreno at left-back who does not have a breeze how to defend. No idea whatsoever. And what will really annoy Klopp is that there were five Liverpool players around [Mark] Noble and not one player put any pressure on Noble or the ball and he could cross the ball in. Andy Carroll finds himself up against Clyne. No contest."

Paddy also explained why he still believes Man City will edge out Arsenal for the Premier League title and also gave his take on whether Man United are showing signs of improvement and if Tottenham can really put themselves in the conversation for the title. Listen in on the podcast player above.
