Is the Six Nations set for relegation and promotion?

Teams who finish at the bottom of the Six Nations may be at risk of temporarily losing their status in the Six Nations.

Weekly newspaper and website The Rugby Paper claim that the idea of promotion and relegation is finally to be broached by Six Nations organisers as calls grow for the game to be expanded.

Since joining the Six Nations in 2000, Italy have finished bottom of the table on 11 occasions. The Azzurri have lost 72 of their 85 matches in the competition.

The performances of Georgia and Romania in recent years has increased the pressure on there being a chance for Tier Two nations to have an opportunity to compete in the Six Nations.

Over 50,000 fans saw the two teams meet in the European Nations Cup earlier this year as Georgia beat Romania 38-9. The two teams have shared the last ten tournaments, with Georgia winning the last six in a row.

If promotion and relegation is to be confirmed Italy would seem like the most likely team to lose their place with Georgia being added to the top table.
