Jason Day wins for the third time in two months

Jason Day cemented his position as the best player in the world, by winning The Players Championship on Sunday night.

The world number one finished on -5, to finish four-shots ahead of the field. Kevin Chappell finished in second place after starting the day six behind Day.

Day's win is the first wire-to-wire win at Sawgrass since 2000, when Hal Sutton was victorious. The former Ryder Cup captain held off the charge of Tiger Woods, 16-years ago in a Monday finish.

The win at Sawgrass is the tenth of Day's career. It his also his seventh win, in his last 17 starts, which included his maiden major triumph last year at the PGA Championship.

In 2016, Day has only missed the cut in one of his ten tournaments. In the other nine. he finished in the top-25 each time. That run of nine tournaments, includes six top-ten finishes and three wins.

It was a positive day for Graeme McDowell, Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry. All three men started their day on -5 and all shot under-par rounds. McDowell finished on -8, with McIlroy on -7 and Lowry a further shot back. All three golfers finished in the top-20.
