Jim McGuinness appointed as assistant coach with Chinese club Beijing Sinobo Guoan

Two-time All-Ireland winner and former Donegal senior football manager Jim McGuinness has accepted an assistant coach position with Chinese side, Beijing Sinobo Guoan.

Reported in Friday morning's Irish Times, McGuinness was offered the position by former Bayer Leverkusen manager Roger Schmidt - who was appointed as manager of the club earlier this month.

"It’s a fantastic opportunity," said McGuinness. "It’s a level up for me and a great honour to be asked. Roger is a really prestigious European coach and just to be part of his management team is a great privilege.

"I also feel that it’s great timing in terms of taking the next step forward in my own coaching career."

He joins the Chinese side on a two-year deal side and will leave his post as part of the coaching staff at Scottish giants Celtic.

McGuinness insists that every decision regarding his future was made with the club's knowledge, adding: "Dermot Desmond [Celtic majority shareholder], in particular, was implicit in any decision made."

He will travel to Beijing on Saturday before beginning in his role on Monday.
