Former All-Ireland winner and GAA pundit Joe Brolly has refused to rule himself out of the running for the Irish presidency.
Speaking on Newstalk’s Yates on Sunday, Brolly gave his clearest indication yet that he may join the race for the Áras in 2018.
It remains unclear whether President Michael D. Higgins will run for a second term and Brolly - who is an active organ donation campaigner and outspoken columnist - said there are “four or five particular causes” he would highlight should he decide to run.
President Higgins will be 76-years-old when his current seven-year term comes to an end.
“I am going to turn the Áras into a homeless hostel and live there with them”, he said adding that there are “maybe about four or five particular causes that I am working on at the moment.”
Pushed by Ivan on whether he was serious about putting his name forward he said, “somebody needs to do something.”
Brolly is currently a 66/1 outsider for the role with the bookies.
“Well I mean come on; you’re not on it already?” he asked Ivan. “It is the easiest money you will ever make – zero cost campaign, volunteers only.”
Brolly discussed everything from his 'Opt For Life' organ donation campaign to his youth as the son of two Sinn Féin politicians in a wide ranging interview with Ivan this morning.
He said he was never inspired to vote for Sinn Féin himself – adding that he views himself as apolitical when it comes to party politics.
Brolly also gave his thoughts on Brexit and the potential for United Ireland - saying that while he does not have a "nationalist outlook" he believes "it is probably inevitable within the next 30 years."
