Pat Nevin's view on Chelsea's meek defeat at Man City

This version of Manchester City are always going to be favourites against almost every side they face.

But the way in which reigning Premier League champions Chelsea meekly surrendered to Pep Guardiola's side on Sunday did catch the eye.

While a heavy metal approach against City is likely to end in a heavy beating nine times out of 10, laying a glove or two on the opposition is certainly something supporters want to see home or away.

Ex-Chelsea and Everton winger Pat Nevin joined Joe and Kevin on the Football Show and we got his take on the way his former club approached things against the champions-in-waiting.

As he explained, Chelsea lacked a genuine out ball with winger Eden Hazard out of position in the furthest forward role.

"You've absolutely nowhere to go because you can't pass out because they're better than you. So when they put Hazard up front on his own, I was a wee bit disappointed because I didn't know if that was a good idea and it clearly wasn't working at all" said Pat.

"They were getting absolutely hammered, they were getting passed off the park, they weren't getting close and they weren't laying a glove but with 20 minutes to go, I'm thinking, you know what, there are plenty of teams doing this and then they have a dig for 20 minutes at the end because they've held off and City do tire a bit towards the end. The problem is that 10-15 minutes didn't happen. It just didn't happen. And if anything I was disappointed with, it was that."

Pat added that a very direct approach at the end could have paid dividends for Chelsea: "I just would have liked to have gone a bit more British at the end and I hate myself for saying it but stick on Giroud and maybe Morata for 20 minutes at the end and just lump it."
