John Giles reacts to "dreadful" Dimitri Payet situation at West Ham

John Giles feels the current standoff between West Ham and their star player Dimitri Payet is "dreadful".

The France international midfielder "does not want to play" for the Hammers according to manager Slaven Bilic following a bid from his former club Marseille that was rejected.

Payet only signed a five-year £125,000 per week contract with West Ham last February.

The 29 year old set piece expert impressed for the London club last season but they have had a far less positive campaign in the Premier League and FA Cup this season.

Speaking to Off The Ball, John can understand Bilic's frustration with the situation.

"If I were a manager, I would feel very angry as well, and it shows how much the players have got on top rather than the clubs," he said.

"Payet has signed a long term contract and has just said 'I don't want to play for you anymore'. So the contract doesn't mean anything now as far as the club is concerned. Unless the club take a really hard line and say 'no you're not going anywhere and we'll let you sit around for two years'. They can't afford to do that obviously.

"I think it's dreadful behaviour. If you sign a contract, you should honour that contract."

John also feels that what has happened may explain why Payet has not had the most stable of club careers or been signed by one of the world's big clubs.

"It shows you with Payet, when he went to West Ham last year, he was sensational and people often wondered 'he's 28 now, where has he been all his life this guy'. Well, this might tell you where he's been all his life - that he has one good season and he wants to go somewhere else," said John.

"I think it's dreadful for a club trying to plan for the future like Bilic is trying to plan for the future and the club gave him a long term contract with good intentions and now he's saying 'I don't want to play for you anymore'."

John believes Bilic won't be able to talk Payet back and feels the best solution is "get the price for him and kick him out".
