John Giles reveals how Jack Charlton's appointment as Ireland manager was ''badly handled''

Today marks the 30th anniversary since Jack Charlton was appointed the head coach of the Irish squad but John Giles says the processed was mishandled and ''disrespectful.''

The Charlton era was a golden period in Irish soccer, in which the national team became famous for reaching the World Cup quarter-final at Italia 90.

But before those glory days unravelled, John Giles, who previously managed Ireland for seven years, explains the controversial process that led to Charlton being named as manager.

Speaking with Ger Gilroy on Off The Ball, Giles recalled:

''It was badly handled. There was a situation where not enough people applied for the job. I was asked to apply and I agreed on the condition that I would be informed when I was out of the running which didn't happen so it was controversial.''

Giles went on to explain why he felt the system used was ''disrespectful'' to both himself and Liam Tuohy:

''Bob Paisley was promised it (the job) and myself and Liam Tuhoy were effectively used to bring both Paisley and Charlton back into contention out of nowhere.''

The former Leeds star spoke about his own time as Ireland manager and also spoke enthusiastically about emerging Irish star Chris Forrester, who impressed in the FA Cup tie for Peterborough last night.

''It's great to see players like that and keep an eye on him. Like Bournemouth have come through with a lot of good players. Peterborough surprised me last night, I haven't seen them before but these are really really good players.''
