John Sullivan has faith in Bray chairman Gerry Mulvey

Bray Wanderers player John Sullivan believes chairman Gerry Mulvey will reimburse him for the cost of his hernia surgery.

Following eight weeks without pay, players of the Seagulls voted to take industrial action against the club before club officials met SIPTU officials on Tuesday night.

In a statement released by the players, it was revealed Sullivan and teammate Hughie Douglas paid for their own operations due to the club being unable to cover them financially.

Sullivan has received support from the PFAI during the eight-week crisis at the Carlisle Grounds but insisted he expects Mulvey to keep to his word about reimbursing the cost of his operation.

“The PFAI assisted me as much as they could. They said to me if I was really stuck for cash that they would offer the help,” Sullivan told OTB.

“That is fantastic but realistically speaking that’s the last thing I’d want them to do because every club would then be declaring bankruptcy and players would have to get help from the PFAI.

“I’m hoping to get my €3,000 back – I’m pretty sure I’ll get it back to be honest. I met up with the chairman and he had signed something for me and Hughie [Douglas] to say we’d get it back.

“He’s a genuine guy – he’s a nice guy. People listening are probably thinking I’m winding them up but he’s a genuine guy.

“Unfortunately over the last 12 months he’s had his own issues to worry about. One of his family members has been seriously sick and during that time my operation came up and I understood – I didn’t really understand – but I took sympathy and consideration that he was going through a lot.

“I’m not going through that much. Physically I can wait and he’s a nice guy. He signed an agreement with me – I do believe I will get it back. And if I had to chase the insurance down I will.”
