Jon Jones suspended for one year for failing a drugs test

Jon Jones has been issued a one-year suspension.

The suspension was enforced on the UFC interim light heavyweight champion, after his case was heard by three arbitrators last week. The United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) announced his ban today.

The failed drugs test is reported to have taken place last June and he will not be able to return to the Octagon until next July.

Jones believes he took a contaminated sexual-performance pill and denies knowingly taking a performance enhancing substance. He was due to fight Daniel Cormier at UFC 200 but was pulled from the fight three days prior to the event.

Explaining their verdict, the arbitrators wrote:

"On the evidence before the Panel, the Applicant is not a drug cheat. He did not know that the tablet he took contained prohibited substances or that those substances had the capacity to enhance sporting performance. However by his imprudent use of what he pungently referred to as a 'd**k pill' he has not only lost a year of his career but an estimated nine million dollars. This outcome which he admits to be a wake-up call for him should serve as a warning to all others who participate in the same sport."
