Jon Rahm confirms Irish Open participation

Spanish superstar Jon Rahm has become the latest player to commit to this year's Irish Open in Portstewart.

Rahm's success has been one of golf's main talking points in 2017. The 22-year-old only turned professional last summer and he is already in the top-15 of the World Rankings.

The low-amateur at last year's US Open, Rahm entered the professional ranks as the best amateur golfer in the World. He has been based in America in recent years due to college commitments.

This season, he has already won at Torrey Pines and has a further five top-ten finishes on the PGA Tour. He started the year outside the top-130 in the World.

Rahm has yet to play on the European Tour, despite being Spanish. He gained membership of the Tour, on entering the World's top-50.

Spanish golfers have a strong history at the Irish Open, and that was not lost on Rahm when he was confirming his entry.

"Seve [Ballasteros], José Maria [Olazabal] and Sergio [Garcia] have all won the Irish Open over the years, so it will be great to try and follow in their footsteps at Portstewart", he told the European Tour's website. "I’m really pleased to support Rory and everything he is trying to do for the event through his Foundation."

"I’m also looking forward to playing a different style of golf on the links of Portstewart which will be valuable preparation for The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale as well."

Rahm is the latest big name to confirm his participation in the event. Major champions Justin Rose and Danny Willett will also play in the tournament alongside the likes of Lee Westwood.

The Irish Open takes place between 6th and 9th of July.
