Jon Walters may miss Euro 2016 with a knee injury

Jon Walters could miss Euro 2016 if he undergoes surgery for a cartilage problem, according to The Irish Daily Mail.

The recovery period could take up to eight weeks and would rule him out for the remainder of the Premier League season with Stoke City.

Speaking to Oisin Langan on Newstalk Breakfast, Irish Daily Mail journalist, Phillip Quinn, says we will find out later on today how bad the injury is.

"I think the full extent of it will become known today when Mark Hughes gives his press conference at Stoke City, they play Swansea this weekend in the Premier League. My understanding is that Hughes will confirm that Walters has a knee injury that's more serious than previously thought."

Although the recovery period would take him up to just before the European Championships for Ireland, the 32-year-old may not be match fit for the tournament.

"Walters loves playing, he'd play every day of the week if he could or if there was a match. He'd run through a brick wall for Stoke and for Ireland.

"I think he'll be OK getting to the Euros starting gate. There will be a lack of matches there, but O'Neill will hope the issue will resolve itself quicker rather than later and he might get a game for Stoke before the end of the season.

"As it was a number of years ago, when Giovanni Trapattoni had a number of players who weren't match fit so had to take a chance on them. O'Neill certainly won't want to take a chance of Walters."
