Jordan Spieth storms into contention with excellent second round

Jordan Spieth cut a determined figure this afternoon as he muscled his way back into contention at the USPGA Championship.

The Texan carded a three-under-par second round to follow his level par opening round and picked up five birdies on his way around Baltusrol Golf Club today.

Just two bogeys offset what was an otherwise sparkling round and Spieth says that the momentum is there to kick on over the weekend.

"Yeah it was really nice," he told Sky Sports. "Two birdies closing yesterday on the last three holes and then two birdies on the first two holes today.

"I hit the ball closer to the hole than yesterday which allowed a higher make percentage from there which is what I needed to get my putter somewhat going.

With regards to the greens, the 23-year-old said that conditions had improved today despite the rain earlier on in the afternoon and that he feels confident with his ball striking.

"[The speeds] felt average. You know yesterday I was leaving a lot short and today they felt about two and a half feet faster... I'm hitting the ball the way I need to hit it to win this championship and if I putt up to my standards, we're in business. I haven't done so well in these first two days but there's a lot of golf left."

He remains six shots off the pace however from leaders Emiliano Grillo and compatriot Jimmy Walker.
