Jurgen Klopp to leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season

Jurgen Klopp's tenure as manager of Borussia Dortmund is to end at the end of the season.

Klopp, who had a contract until the end of the 2018 season, asked the Dortmund hierarchy to leave the club, three years early.

Rumours began to circulate this morning of Klopp's departure when the club's official twitter account announced a press conference to take place at 12.30pm Irish time.

The Stuttgart native became head coach at the Westfalenstadion in 2008 after spending 19 years at Mainz as a player and a coach.

His tenure at Dotmund will be remembered fondly by fans. He guided the club to two league titles, one German Cup and he also brought the team to the Champions League final in 2013.

German rivals Bayern Munich defeated Borussia 2-1 at Wembley in that final at it was the Bavarian side who caused Klopp and his side the most problems in recent years.

In the past two summers, Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski have joined Pep Guardiola's side with Dortmund struggling to replace the two players.

This season has proven to be a huge disappointment for Klopp and his squad, with relegation seeming like a possibility before Christmas.

The winter break seemed to come at the right time for his side. They currently lie in tenth place, 37 points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

Klopp is expected to return to management with another club this summer, looking for a fresh challenge.
