Justin Thomas makes US Open history

Justin Thomas made history during the third round of the US Open at Erin Hills on Saturday evening.

The American posted nine-under-par round of 63 in Wisconsin, the lowest score in relation to par in the 122-year history of the US Open.

The round saw him surge up the leaderboard in a tie for second alongside compatriot Brooks Koepka and England's Tommy Fleetwood on -11. The pair sit one shot adrift of leader Brian Harman.

"It was obviously an awesome day," he said on Saturday.

"My game has felt pretty good all week. It just was trying to take advantage of the opportunities I had and when it was a tougher hole or tougher pin, just come take my medicine or make a par.

"The front nine, to end with those three birdies just kind of turned an average or a decent nine into a great nine to where I could kind of get some momentum going into the back and try to post a great number out there.

"Obviously, the [eagle] finish was awesome. I'd love to have another one of those."

He added: "I'm not sure when it's going to sink in or when I'm going to realize what I did."

Action concludes on Sunday evening, with another first-time major winner likely to be crowned.
