Justin Thomas loves Hawaii!

Four days after winning the Tournament of Champions (his first PGA Tour title on American soil), Thomas became the sixth golfer in the history of the PGA Tour to shoot a round in the 50s.

Thomas' 59 has given him a three-shot lead in the opening round of the Sony Open. He leads the field from Hudson Swafford, with Rory Sabbatini a shot further back.

The 23-year-old made more history by becoming the youngest player to achieve the feat. He began his round on the tenth hole and book-ended his round with a pair of eagles on his first and last holes.

The key to the round came around the turn, with six birdies in seven holes. His sole bogey came on the 11th hole (Thomas' second), when he failed to find the green on the par-three.

Needing an eagle on the final hole to make history, Thomas' tee shot found a fairway bunker, before his second shot landed on the green. After his round he admitted he felt his opportunity was still possible walking down the fairway, despite the errand tee-shot.

"Any time you're in history in any sport or whatever you're doing, it's a good thing. We all know it's the magical number in golf. I knew I had a great chance in Malaysia last year, and I was really honestly pretty bummed when that didn't happen and I was so bummed when that tee shot went in the bunker."

"I thought it was going to be good. I got up there and had a perfect lie, and I'm like, you know what am I going to do, lay up? And if it comes off, great, and if not, whatever. It was really cool."

Thomas looks set to have another good week in Hawaii. No player who has shot a 59 or lower has finished outside the top-five in that same PGA Tour event.
