France's football federation has announced that is suspending Karim Benzema pending the outcome of the investigation into the sex tape blackmail plot.
The Real Madrid striker, who has 27 goals in 81 caps for his country, is not available for international selection as a result, and with Euro 2016 kicking off next June, the 27-year-old is in danger of missing the tournament on home soil.
"Today, Karim Benzema is no longer available for selection. It's a personal decision," said France FA chief Noel Le Graet, adding that international manager Didier Deschamps has been informed of the decision.
"Benzema will not be available for selection in March, nor for Euro 2016 if the situation has not evolved."
Benzema has been charged with complicity in an alleged attempt to blackmail France team-mate Mathieu Valbuena regarding a sex tape, although the former Lyon player denies the charge.
