Katie Taylor breezes through first step on road to 2016 Olympics

Katie Taylor has made a winning start to her bid for Olympic qualification at the European Olympic qualifiers in Turkey.

The London 2012 gold medal winner has beaten her Czech opponent Martina Schmoranzova this evening winning all three rounds of their last-16 contest in the lightweight division.

Earlier, Taylor's team-mates Céire Smith and Christina Desmond also won their preliminary round bouts to advance to Wednesday's quarter-finals.

Only the finalists from this week's competition will secure Olympic qualification in the women's draw.

Meanwhile, there was disappointment for men's light-welterweight Dean Walsh, who narrowly lost on a split decision to the top-seed, Lorenzo Sotomayor of Azerbaijan.

Walsh will have one final chance to book a spot at Rio at the world qualifiers in June.

Brendan Irvine and Dean Gardiner will also be in action during this evening's session.
