Katie Taylor named Ireland's most admired female sports star

Katie Taylor has been named as Ireland's most admired female sports star.

The Bray boxer topped the list that saw Olympic silver medallists Sonia O'Sullivan and Annalise Murphy finish in second and third place respectively.

Since winning gold at London 2012, Taylor has been one of Ireland's most famous sports stars, and along with O'Sullivan's and Murphy's achievements, it shows the power and accessibility of Olympic sports in Ireland.

The survey was commissioned by Liberty Insurance as part of their #SupportHerSport initiative ahead of International Women's Day.

Among the key findings in the report was that jut under three-quarters of women aged between 17-24 have little or no interest in sport. 35% of women not involved in sport between the ages of 25-34 believe they are too old to participate in sport.

While participation levels continue to be an issue, the majority of those surveyed (55%) also said there was not enough coverage of female sport in Ireland.

Currently, Ireland's Six Nations games are broadcast on television, along with the Republic of Ireland's senior matches. All-Ireland football and camogie finals are also shown live on television.

Despite the issues raised in the report, one in two people are now more aware of women's sport in Ireland than they were 12 months ago.
