Kevin Kilbane reminisces about being refereed by Mike Dean

Premier League referee Mike Dean has been at the centre of the spotlight in the wake of the recent fixture between West Ham and Manchester United.

His decision to red card West Ham winger Sofiane Feghouli - a decision since overturned - was on the end of particular criticism from pundits and former players.

For example, former Ireland winger Stephen Hunt shared memories of being refereed by Dean that would not fit under the category of "fond".

Writing in The Sunday Independent before Monday's game between West Ham and Man United, the former Reading and Wolves player wrote: "There's one referee, however, I'd like to see more respect from. "You can probably guess who it is - Mike Dean. He's the most arrogant referee going. In fact, he's probably the most arrogant man I've ever met on a football pitch."

On Wednesday night's Off The Ball, co-presenter and former Ireland international Kevin Kilbane recalled his own first hand memories of an experienced referee that has been officiating in the Premier League since 2000 and has been FIFA listed from 2003 to 2013.

"He was one of those refs, Mike Dean, that you'd speak about him in the dressing room before the game and as crazy as that sounds, when you had Mike Dean you always spoke about him because he wasn't great to deal with, I felt - the way he used to dismiss you," Kevin recalls.

"Stephen Hunt wrote a really good piece on him at the weekend. He was spot on.

"[Dean] used to totally dismiss you. He wouldn't talk to you.

"Mark Clattenburg gets a bit of a raw deal because of the tattoos but he's actually a good ref to deal with. He'll have a laugh with you."

During tonight's Newsround, Kevin also shared memories of other Premier League referees including Graham Poll and Howard Webb.
