Kieren Fallon retires from horse racing

Kieren Fallon has retired from horse racing, aged 51.

The six-time British Champion jockey was one of the most successful flat jockeys of recent years. The Clare native won the British 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas, along with the Epsom Derby and Epsom Oaks on at least three occasions each.

According to the Irish Field, Fallon has been suffering form severe depression. His condition has worsened in recent weeks, and contributed to his decision to retire, along with suffering a fall while training last weekend.

His daughter Natalie led the tributes to the Clare native. He will continue to work behind the scenes at The Curragh with trainer Michael O'Callaghan.

While best known for his performances in Britain, Fallon also had a successful career at home. He won multiple Irish Oaks Irish Derbys and was also in the winner's enclosure after the Irish Champion Stakes. He won the race two years in a row on board Dylan Thomas.

In 2007, Fallon was also found not guilty of race fixing, after a 2004 News of the World article made allegations against the jockey.

Fallon will retire having won more than 2,000 races in an illustrious career.
