Kilkenny loss in last year's camogie final was like "a death in the family"

Dublin camogie star Sarah O'Donovan believes Kilkenny should have enough in their arsenal to topple Cork this weekend following last year's heartbreaking All-Ireland final defeat.

A late, late Julia White point handed the Rebels their third All-Ireland crown in the space of four years in front of more than 20,000 spectators at Croke Park.

The two go head-to-head once again in this Sunday's All-Ireland final, with Kilkenny keen to exact revenge on their fierce rivals.

Speaking on Off The Ball's Saturday Panel in association with Screwfix Ireland, O'Donovan revealed her conversation with Kilkenny's Ann Dalton after last year's final and described the impact of the defeat had on the Cats.

"[Dalton] said that losing that final last year was like a death in the family," O'Donovan said.

"She called down to Ann Downey's [Kilkenny camogie manager] house that night after the final and there was silence. They were distraught. Everyone was distraught.

"I don't see Kilkenny coming out with anything less than absolute fire in this game tomorrow.

"Now, I have full faith in Cork to match it, but I just think Kilkenny were so wounded by that loss last year that they will be a different team."

Sarah Dervan added: "It's nearly going to be a game of chess between Ann Downey and Paudie Murray [Cork camogie manager].

"You had the saga last year with Gemma O'Connor and the holy water on her knee. He never told anyone she was playing until she lined out.

"It's all going to be full of tactics and they'll try expose each other's weaknesses as best they can. It's going to be a fantastic game to watch."
