Lawyers say FIFA officials awarded themselves in excess of €70 million

The FIFA corruption story continues to meander in an uncontrollable fashion.

Earlier today, news broke that a raid of FIFA's Zurich's office had taken place by Swiss authorities and reports also suggested that Gianni Infantino was facing a possible ban due to secret emails uncovered during the Thursday raid.

Lawyers investigating the case now suggest that Sepp Blatter, Jerome Valcke and Markus Kattner awarded themselves excessive amounts of money in salary increases, bonuses and other incentives.

“The evidence appears to reveal a coordinated effort by three former top officials of FIFA to enrich themselves through annual salary increases, World Cup bonuses and other incentives totalling more than 79m Swiss francs in just the last five years,” said Bill Burck of Quinn Emanuel, the US law firm retained by FIFA during its corruption crisis.

Blatter and Valcke have been handed down substantial bans from football while Kattner was fired from his position of 13 years as financial director by FIFA for bonus payments.

A FIFA statement suggests that the money awarded to the top-ranking officials "appear to violate mandatory Swiss law."

"It is clear that the preliminary findings indicate that the payments and contracts warrant considerable further investigation," the statement read.

"Fifa has shared this information with the Office of the Swiss Attorney General and it will brief the US Department of Justice on the matters as well."
