LeBron James supports Colin Kaepernick but will continue to stand for the national anthem

LeBron James has revealed he will stand for the American national anthem ahead of NBA matches in the forthcoming season, but supports Colin Kaepernick's stance.

Speaking at a pre-season media day in Ohio on Monday, the 2016 NBA Finals MVP said despite respecting and believing in Kaepernick's stance, he would not be following the San Francisco 49ers quarterback.

"Me standing for the national anthem is something I will do," James told ESPN. "That's who I am. That's what I believe in. But that doesn't mean I don't respect and don't believe in what Colin Kaepernick is doing. You have the right to voice your opinion, stand for your opinion, and he's doing it in the most peaceful way I've ever seen someone do something."

James is very vocal on African-American matters, and earlier this year at the ESPYs, he spoke about hoping to see the end of gun violence, along with Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony and Dwayne Wade.

The three-time NBA champion defended Kaepernick's actions, on Monday claiming that the quarterback has been receiving undue criticism.

"What I do not like about the situation is the negative attention that has been thrown upon him by some people because it's not deserved," James revealed. "He was very educated, very smart, very candid and very demanding about what he wanted to do, and he didn't ask anyone else to join him. And he did it in the most peaceful manner I've ever seen anyone stand up and do something."

Cleveland begin their NBA defence on October 25th away to the New York Knicks.
