Lionel Messi sets Ballon D'Or record as he wins world of the player of the year prize

Lionel Messi has won the FIFA Ballon D'Or award for world's best player for a record fifth time.

The Barcelona star beat competition from team-mate Neymar and long-time rival and reigning Ballon D'Or holder Cristiano Ronaldo to claim the coveted prize at today's award ceremony in Zurich.

Messi, who won the award in 2009, 2010, 2011  and 2012, has been rewarded for a campaign which saw him win another treble with Barcelona, help Argentina to the Copa America final and score over 75 goals in all competitions since the start of the 2014-15 season. 

He won the prize with 41.33% of the votes.

USA's Carli Lloyd won Women's world player of the year after a year which saw her score a hat-trick in the World Cup final against Japan including this outstanding goal:

Barcelona manager Luis Enrique received the World Coach of the Year award, while USA boss Jill Ellis took the women's award after leading USA to World Cup glory last summer.

She received 42.9% of the votes to beat Japan's Norio Sasaki and England's Mark Sampson.

Brazilian Wendell Lira took the FIFA Puskas award for Goal of the Year thanks to this tasty effort:

The FIFA FIFPro World XI of the Year saw Barcelona and Real Madrid contribute four players each:
